In a stunning and emotional announcement, legendary musician Billy Joel has officially pulled the plug on his upcoming U.S. tour dates after being diagnosed with a rare brain disorder — normal pressure hydrocephalus (NPH).
The 76-year-old “Piano Man” icon broke the news on Friday through a heartfelt statement shared across his social media channels.The diagnosis follows weeks of escalating health issues that have impacted his ability to perform.
The statement revealed that Joel’s recent concerts had only made matters worse, worsening symptoms tied to his condition.
“The condition has been exacerbated by recent concert performances, leading to problems with hearing, vision and balance,” the statement read.
Currently undergoing treatment, Joel has been instructed by doctors to take a step back from the stage. “Under his doctor’s instructions, Billy is undergoing specific physical therapy and has been advised to refrain from performing during this recovery period,” the message continued. “Billy is thankful for the excellent care he is receiving and is fully committed to prioritizing his health.”
Normal pressure hydrocephalus, or NPH, occurs when cerebrospinal fluid builds up in the brain, leading to pressure inside the skull. While it primarily affects people over 65, it is often treatable — and sometimes even reversible. Symptoms can include difficulty walking, balance issues, dementia, and urinary incontinence, according to the Cleveland Clinic.
Fans across the country are sending their well-wishes to Joel, who has been a fixture in American music for decades. The six-time Grammy winner closed his statement with a message straight from the heart: “I am sincerely sorry to disappoint our audience, and thank you for understanding.”
