It was with great sorrow that we reported the death of universally-loved judge Frank Caprio this morning.

Achieving viral fame on the show Caught In Providence, Caprio served a court in Providence, Rhode Island. Sadly, the 88-year-old passed away after being diagnosed with pancreatic cancer in 2023.

A statement announcing his death outlined how Caprio was “beloved around the world for his deep compassion, humility, and unwavering faith”, adding that he “touched millions through his work in the courtroom, and even more through his example of humanity.”

Having garnered a reputation for being a kind and understanding judge, Caprio accrued a number of fans online. A good many of them are now reminiscing over his good deeds as they head to his social media pages to share their condolences.

Of all the examples of generosity and compassion Caprio became known for, perhaps there’s no better example than the time he shared a courtroom exchange with a 96-year-old who had been hit with a speeding ticket.

The video in question was shared by a Reddit user following Caprio’s passing, exemplifying the empathy the veteran judge often exhibited in his position as a public official.

The case in question involved a 96-year-old man named Mr Coella, who had been handed a school zone violation for exceeding the speed limit. Responding to the charge, Mr Coella said: “I don’t drive that fast, Judge. I’m 96 years old and I drive slowly. I only drive when I have to.”

The defendant then went on to explain how he was taking his disabled son to get his blood work done. “He’s 63. I take him for blood work every two weeks, because he’s got cancer,” Coella said.

Both he and Judge Caprio grew teary-eyed in the exchange, with the latter then rendering a verdict that drew praise online.

“You are a good man,” he told Coella. “You really are what America is all about. Here you are in your nineties, and you’re still taking care of your family. It’s just a wonderful thing for you.

“I wish the best for your son, and I wish you good health, and your case is dismissed. Good luck to you and God bless you.”

Following the resurfacing of the clip, it’s been met with a new wave of appreciation online.

One Reddit user wrote: “I just read that this man passed and I actually cried. I never cry. Now, watching this I’m crying again. Why can’t all humans be like him?”

“Rest in peace you beautiful human being,” another added.

Rest in peace, Judge Frank Caprio.
