But in that moment, something shifted inside me. I realized that if I continued to stay silent, I would be tacitly accepting her behavior. I decided that I needed to stand up for myself, not just for my own sake, but to try and salvage some semblance of peace in our household.

I took a deep breath and stood up, water dripping from my clothes onto the floor. “I understand that this is your house,” I said, keeping my voice as calm as possible. “But it’s my home now too. I’m trying to fit in and abide by your rules, but respect is a two-way street.”

Her eyes narrowed slightly, and I could tell she wasn’t expecting this kind of response. She opened her mouth to retort, but I continued. “Waking me up by pouring water on me isn’t just disrespectful, it’s hurtful. I didn’t sleep in because I’m lazy, I stayed up late last night finishing the tasks you asked me to do. I’m trying my best, and I need you to see that.”
