For a moment, there was silence. I could see a flicker of something in her eyes—surprise, perhaps, or maybe even a grudging respect. But just as quickly, she turned away, muttering something under her breath before leaving the room.

I spent the rest of the day in a daze, replaying the encounter in my mind. Had I done the right thing? Would this make things worse? When my husband returned home, I told him everything. He was shocked and apologized profusely, promising to talk to his mother.

In the following weeks, there was a noticeable change in my mother-in-law’s behavior. The icy remarks and blatant hostility gradually diminished, replaced by a tense, but more respectful, coexistence. It wasn’t perfect, but it was a step forward.
