Taking a deep breath, I walked over to Emma and knelt down beside her. “Hey, sweetheart,” I said gently, trying to smile despite the lump in my throat. “How about we go get some ice cream instead?”

Emma’s eyes lit up, and she nodded eagerly, her earlier disappointment forgotten. I took her hand, leading her away from the pool and away from the toxic environment my sister had unknowingly created.

In the days that followed, I made a conscious decision to have an open and honest conversation with my sister about acceptance and understanding. I hoped to bridge the gap her prejudice had widened, for Emma’s sake and for the sake of our family.
