When a fire engulfed her Illinois home, 21-year-old Shelby Carter made an unthinkable decision to save her 10-day-old daughter, Keana. Trapped upstairs as smoke filled the house, Shelby secured her newborn in a car seat and dropped her from a second-story window—an act that firefighters later said saved the baby’s life.
Paramedics found Keana safe on the ground when they arrived, according to Wyoming-Speer Fire Department Captain Jake Plumer.
