As they drove, Alexander spoke gently, telling her stories of his childhood and how he overcame his struggles. Emily listened intently, her fear slowly ebbing away with each word.
They stopped at a cozy diner, where Alexander ordered a feast fit for a king. Emily’s eyes widened as plates of pancakes, bacon, and eggs were set before her. As she ate, Alexander watched with a fond smile, seeing a glimmer of life returning to her eyes.
“Do you have anywhere to go, Emily?” Alexander asked gently once she had finished eating.
She shook her head, a shadow passing over her face. “No. I don’t have anyone.”
