“Hello, little one,” Alexander said softly, trying to meet Emily’s tear-filled eyes. “Are you alright?”
Emily looked up at him, her face a mix of fear and hope. She shook her head, unable to find words. Her teddy bear, now muddy, was clutched tightly to her chest as if it were her last shield against the world.
“Let’s get you out of this cold,” Alexander said, offering his hand. His voice was soothing, like a balm for her wounded heart. “I promise, you’re safe with me.”
