I approached Jason and Amelia, who were still standing, seemingly paralyzed by the unfolding scenario. “Jason,” I said softly, “I’m sorry it came to this. I never wanted to make a scene. I only wanted to give you both a beautiful day.”
Jason finally seemed to shake himself out of his stupor. He looked at me, his eyes filled with regret and apology. “Mom, I had no idea. I never would have let—” He glanced at Amelia but didn’t finish the sentence.
Amelia, for her part, met my gaze with a mix of anger and shame. “I didn’t know,” she said, her voice barely audible over the din. “I thought it was some rich uncle or something. I just—” She trailed off, realizing that no excuse could justify her actions.
