Taking a deep breath, I slowly lowered my hands from my face. I looked her straight in the eyes, and instead of retaliating with anger or tears, I did something unexpected – I smiled. It wasn’t a forced or sarcastic smile, but a genuine one that came from a place of understanding and strength.
“Mom,” I said softly, but with a firmness in my voice that surprised even me, “I understand that you’re upset and that things aren’t perfect. But today is a celebration of love, not perfection. We are here to enjoy each other’s company, and I have done my best to make this day special for everyone, especially for your son.”
