Pope Francis Had Less Than £100 at Time of Death Despite £300K Salary
Despite a yearly salary of around £300,000, Pope Francis died with less than £100 in personal wealth, according to some reports. The 88-year-old passed away on 21 April from a cerebral stroke, and was mourned by hundreds of thousands during his funeral in Rome.
Known for his humility, the pontiff rejected papal luxuries, choosing to live in a Vatican guesthouse instead of the Apostolic Palace.
Though some estimated his net worth at £16 million—based on assets tied to his office—Francis reportedly declined his salary and donated it to charitable causes.
As a Jesuit, he took vows of poverty, chastity, and obedience, living simply and advocating for the poor. In 2019, he controversially converted a Roman palace into a homeless shelter. He chose the name “Francis” in honor of Saint Francis of Assisi, reflecting his lifelong dedication to service and humility.
