The silence was supposed to be comforting, a signal of universal blessing for our union, but I could feel the weight of the guests’ eyes on us, a mix of pity and skepticism clouding the room. I clutched his hand a little tighter, drawing strength from the warmth of his presence beside me. My heart raced with a mix of love and defiance, and I knew he felt it too.

Then, as if on cue, he signaled for a brief pause in the ceremony. Curious but trusting, I watched as he took a deep breath and nodded to his best man. There was a moment of suspense, a collective intake of breath among the guests, and then it happened — something that no one, including me, expected.
