Relief washed over me, but it was swiftly replaced by confusion and anger. “Allergic reaction? To what?” Caleb was allergic to peanuts, but I had warned Amber numerous times about it.

Amber looked even more shaken. “I swear, I didn’t give him anything with peanuts. I… I just don’t understand.”

I looked at her, trying to gauge whether this was genuine ignorance or something else more sinister. Before I could say anything more, the police arrived, having been notified by the paramedics. They began taking statements, and I followed Caleb to the hospital, my heart still pounding in my chest.
